How to compost your compostable coffee bag

Our compostable coffee bags are made from certified home compostable materials (except for the degassing valve which is made from PET) and are designed to be composted at home. Here’s how you can dispose of your coffee bag responsibly.

Our compostable coffee bag is made from certified home compostable materials (except for the degassing valve which is made from PET) and is designed to be composted at home. Here’s how you can dispose of your coffee bag responsibly.

1. Remove the degassing valve. Remove the valve by peeling it off the bag. Easy as.

Side note: You might be wondering why the bag has a valve. Freshly roasted beans release CO2 gas for a little while after the roast. The one-way degassing valve allows the gas to escape so that the bag doesn’t inflate and explode, letting air out while keeping the freshness in. While the valve is made from PET, we’ve designed it so it can be easily removed and responsibly disposed of.

2. Dispose of the valve responsibly. Most local area councils will accept the valve in recycling bins, so we recommend you check with yours to see if you can recycle it. If not, pop it into the general rubbish bin.

3. Compost the bag. The remaining bag (including the zipper) is 100% home compostable. Happy days! Simply add to your garden compost, and it should take around 12 weeks to break down (give or take, depending on conditions and climate).

Not sure where to start when it comes to home composting?

First up, get yourself a garden compost bin. The optimum compost recipe is generally made up of three parts brown materials (ie. dried plants, fallen leaves, cardboard, newspaper) with one part green material (kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, animal manures and fresh grass trimmings). If your compost looks a bit slimy and isn’t smelling too flash, add more brown materials or aerate it more often. If it looks a little too dry, add green items and water to balance it out a bit. Getting the right consistency means your compost will break down the right way.
