Coffee sustainability predictions in 2024

Our prediction is that in 2024, there’ll be a stark jump from sustainability as just a trend to being a fundamental aspect of success for cafes and coffee roasters. We think that packaging sustainability and accessibility, really good, transparent communication with customers and obtaining certifications are great places for coffee businesses to start when thinking about their sustainability roadmaps for the year.

Here’s our wrap on the top coffee sustainability predictions for the year ahead

As we kick off a new year, most of us are putting our strategic plans in place and likely a big part of that is considering our sustainability practices from an environmental and social perspective. Building on trends we’ve seen in 2023, conversations we’ve been having within the industry and available research, we’ve put together a list of predictions for 2024 for coffee roasters and cafes to consider as they plan decision making. Think we’ve missed something important? Let us know by emailing us at eco@epsdistribution.com.au.

Our 6 top predictions for 2024:

  1. Zero-waste and the 2025 APCO targets will continue to drive decision making. Sustainability is becoming not just an important element for any business to focus on, but also a very necessary box to tick to comply with state-by-state legislation. This will result in a more focused effort to embrace kerbside recyclable and compostable packaging, adopt reusable options, reduce coffee-waste (making programs like Reground only more in demand) and other waste reduction strategies throughout the coffee roasting process.

  2. Accessibility will be an even hotter topic. We’re predicting that there will be more conversations had around what packaging end of life solution is most feasible and accessible for customers. We think this will mean a rise in kerbside recyclable packaging options, alongside compostable products which have stolen most of the limelight over the previous years.

  3. Carbon neutral operations will be an expectation: Carbon neutrality is no longer a distant goal but an expectation for businesses in 2024. Cafes and roasters are expected to assess and offset their carbon footprint, incorporating renewable energy sources, efficient equipment, and sustainable practices to achieve net-zero emissions.

  4. More transparency with customers on supply chain and sourcing: Consumers are increasingly interested in the journey of their coffee, from farm to cup. Cafe and roaster businesses will feel more of a pull to prioritise ethically sourced and transparently labeled coffee beans, then be able to communicate about this by providing information about the origin, farming practices, and relevant certifications.

  5. BCorp as a ticket to play: BCorp certification is becoming less of a nice to have and more of a ticket to play for businesses, coffee-related or not (on this topic, stay tuned for more info on EcoBarista’s BCorp journey soon) as consumers demand more transparency. In 2024, it won’t be enough to talk the talk, consumers will want proof that you are who you say you are.

  6. A bigger focus on end consumer education: Sustainability goes beyond products, it also requires education. If a customer gets their takeaway coffee in a kerbside recyclable coffee cup and then throws it in the landfill bin, the cup isn’t really sustainable. Cafes and roasteries will look to find more opportunities to engage with their communities through educational initiatives, workshops, and partnerships, empowering customers to make better informed and more sustainable choices.

In summary, our prediction is that in 2024, there’ll be a stark jump from sustainability as just a trend to being a fundamental aspect of success for cafes and coffee roasters. We think that packaging sustainability and accessibility, really good, transparent communication with customers and obtaining certifications are great places for coffee businesses to start when thinking about their sustainability roadmaps for the year.
